Yahoo Finance Aldi shopper vents over 'beyond insulting' checkout problem
A mum, claiming to be a lawyer, has called an Aldi cashier “arrogant” for refusing to serve her alcohol.
The woman, a resident of Jerrabomberra in NSW, took to Facebook to share her frustration after she went to the supermarket with her son.
“I had my hands full with other items, so I asked my son to hold the alcohol (which I took off of the shelf) and to place it onto the conveyor belt for me,” she wrote.
“After this action took place, my son was asked for his ID by the arrogant Aldi cashier. I promptly advised the cashier that I was the adult purchasing the alcohol and confirmed his age to be 13.”
However, she wrote the cashier refused to sell the alcohol to her and told her “it is illegal” to sell or supply alcohol to anyone aged under 18. She asked to see the manager.
“When I advised the manager that I was a lawyer and that I know what the law is, she mouthed back and said words to the effect, ‘well, if you're a lawyer, then you should know what the law is’,” she wrote.
“The manager went on to say, ‘I am not your daughter, do not lecture me regarding my 'backchat'.’ She also threatened to have me removed from the store entirely.”
Mum finds supermarket questioning ‘insulting’
The mum wrote she found the conversation and suggesting of “bootlegging” alcohol for her son “insulting”.
“When quoting from the Sale of Goods Act 1954, it would be appreciated if ignorant Aldi cashiers and managers knew the basic requirements of what is involved in a contract of sale between merchant and consumer,” she wrote.
In NSW and other states and territories in Australia, it’s illegal to sell alcohol to anyone aged under 18 which most people will know.
But it’s also illegal to sell alcohol to an adult who then passes it on to someone aged 18 or under. That’s not to say that’s what this mum’s intention was.
As Aldi explained in its response to the post, its staff “always err on the side of caution”.
It added staff “do not allow alcohol to be sold to persons accompanied by a minor, or to persons under the age of 18”.
