Aldi has come out on top in a taste test of supermarket Christmas hams, beating out offerings from major players Coles, Woolworths, Costco, and IGA.
The ham connoisseurs at Australian Pork undertook an inaugural ‘blind taste test’ of the festive favourite, giving positive feedback to Coles’ Triple Smoked Half Leg ($9/kg), Bertocchi’s Semi-Boneless Shoulder Ham from Woolworths ($8/kg) and IGA’s Naturally Smoked Leg Ham ($8.99/kg).
At a budget-friendly $7.99/kg, Costco’s Central Highlands Pork Ham on the Bone scooped the award for best value and baking.
But it was winner, winner Christmas ham dinner for Aldi’s Triple Smoked Half Leg which, when compared with the competition, is more expensive however the judges were won over by its smoky flavour.
“It was a close call in judging this year. The quality of all the Christmas hams we tasted this year was very high,” Margo Andrae, CEO of Australian Pork Limited and Christmas judge tells Yahoo Lifestyle.
“The winning product from Aldi stood out as good-looking ham in the line-up, with a beautiful uniform colour and smoky taste that will complement, rather than overpower any glaze Australians might try this Christmas.”
Shane Aitken, Aldi Australia Ham Buying Director, tells Yahoo Australia that the supermarket is ‘proud’ to have come first in the Australian Pork Aussie Ham Taste Test.
“Our Specially Selected Triple Smoked Half Leg Ham is just one of the many high-quality and affordable hams available at Aldi this season.
“Whether you’re looking to impress guests with a festive showstopper, entertaining for a smaller crowd, or after a convenient way to prevent kitchen chaos, we’ve definitely gone ham this year with our range.”
The award-winning Specially Selected Triple Smoked Half Leg Ham is made in Australia and cured, cooked and triple smoked with natural wood using traditional European methods.
“Customers can head in-store now to purchase this year’s winner, with stock available up to Christmas Day,” Mr Aitken adds.
