An Alabama man is charged with murder after a man he “got into it” with and shot during the Alabama-LSU game died of his injuries last week.

David Allen Fulkerson, 31, shot James Michael Roland “Mikie” Merritt, 29, while watching the Nov. 9 game from Fulkerson’s home, police told the Florence TimesDaily. The men’s respective girlfriends are sisters, per the report.

Merritt was on life support until Friday. The attempted murder charge was upgraded to murder and Fulkerson’s bond went from $50,000 to $100,000, per the TimesDaily.

"They just got into it over the ball game," Colbert County sheriff Frank Williamson told the TimesDaily. "They'd been jawing at each other all day. Alcohol played a big part in it."

AL.com obtained court records and reported that Fulkerson was rooting for Alabama and Merritt for LSU. Per AL.com:

“When Merritt called a football player an expletive, Fulkerson thought he had said it to him and grabbed his gun.

“Fulkerson’s defense attorney has claimed that the shooting was in self-defense, evidenced by a black eye he suffered. However, one witness told authorities that she watched Fulkerson hit himself in the face.”

LSU defeated Alabama, 46-41. It wasn’t the only known shooting during this year’s game. An Oregon man is charged with attempted murder after an argument turned physical. He allegedly used a shotgun to shoot a friend walking away down the driveway and then continued to watch the game. Police also said alcohol played a factor. The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.

An Alabama fan died last year when he got into an altercation at a bar with two LSU fans. A man was shot in both legs in 2013 after the annual game.
