A whole island to yourself for $460,000? But there’s a catch
Introverts rejoice: For around $460,000 (US$339,000), you could live on a private island with nobody but seals for company.
What’s known as Duck Ledges Island is in Wohoa Bay in Maine in the United State, and is only a short boat ride to the nearest town.
With uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and sandy beaches on all sides, life in this 50 sqm timber cottage would be idyllic.

But there’s a catch. There’s no bathroom inside the home, and you’ll be braving the elements to get to the outdoor loo every time nature calls.
Life would indeed be simple on the island, with a ladder leading up to the bedroom from the one main living area.
There’s also no heating, cooling or hot water, according to the listing.
You won’t be bored though: The ledges surrounding the island are apparently “loaded with seals for constant entertainment”.
But be warned: These playful ocean puppies tend to come with an unpleasant odour.
The home comes with its own mooring next to the island and is a short boat ride to the Jonesport public marina or Addison facility.
Housing affordability
The asking price for this entire island wouldn’t get you very far in Australia’s big cities.
Australia’s housing affordability is now among the worst in the world.
Five Australian capital cities made the 2022 Demographia International Housing Affordability report, which ranked Sydney as the second-least-affordable housing market, internationally, after Hong Kong.
The median dwelling value in the harbourside city is $1.1 million.
