For the first time in a long time, it feels like seasonal trends might actually matter again. Not so much in the grand scheme of things, of course, but the idea of dressing up to go out isn’t so far-fetched. Luckily, many of the top fall 2021 trends are focused around the joy of getting dressed — the spirit of putting on something new or old and feeling the rush that only someone who enjoys trying on no fewer than seven outfits in the morning could understand.
I often love to spend these transitional-weather weeks swapping out soon-to-be-unseasonal items, taking stock of the upcoming trends and refreshing my wardrobe. Usually, this process starts in the form of scrolling through Instagram saves, but this year, with street style at an all-time low and most designers presenting digital collections, I was left to do my own research: shopping. Dozens of brands and retailers are already ahead of this season’s top trends — and the good news is that many are fun, more joyful twists on the classics you already own. Ahead, the seven fall trends I’m already wearing, plus where to get my favorite pieces.
Bright Colors
I’ll be the first to admit that bright colors have no place in my wardrobe, but instead of completely shunning the trend, I’m incorporating it in small doses. If you’re similarly color-phobic, try adding in saturated yellows, deep reds and even greens with accents like a scarf, a handbag or even a mask. I recently wore a bright yellow scarf as a shirt, and I have zero regrets.

Sweater Weather
Sweaters have long been an autumnal mainstay, but this season, they’re less librarian-chic and more look-at-me. Whether you go for a color-blocked style with a wrap-around makeshift belt or something with cutouts down the side, know that your typical beige crewneck probably isn’t going to cut it. Besides, the sun’s about to set at 5 p.m., so why not do everything you can to make your day a little brighter?

Low-Rise Pants
I’m sorry to report that low-rise pants are having a renaissance. More specifically, low-rise trousers, jeans and other below-the-hip pant styles made quite the hasty comeback on the Spring 2022 runways in New York earlier this month, but you can expect the divisive trend to trickle into our wardrobes ASAP. You know what they say: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Make the look supremely modern by opting for a baggier fit and sizing up on boyfriend jeans or straight-leg trousers.

Second-Skin Loungewear
Over the last 18 months, loungewear has emerged as less of a trend and more of a way of life. But you don’t have to go the baggy sweatpants route to feel comfortable — instead, invest in a matching set that feels more like a second skin than anything. Dozens of brands have opted to make this type of knit in a matching set, but it’s possible to get the same effect by going the separates route, too.

Oversized Jackets
The oversized jacket has long reigned supreme as the fall outerwear go-to, but this season, it’s carried over into other types of jackets, like bombers, overshirts and parkas. Layer yours over a similarly oversized button-down, then balance out the voluminous top with something more prim on the bottom.

Cutouts
What started as a nod to summer in the ‘90s has come full circle for autumn, too. It may be too cold to wear all-over cutouts like Dua Lipa, but embrace the trend with a simple frock with a hip cutout, or dive headfirst into the trend with something that looks like a sophisticated art project, such as this cutout tank from NYC-based brand K.ngsley.

Heavy-Footed
While slouchy, knee-high boots and preppy loafers will never go out of style, this season, the heavier, the better. Punk-inspired brogues and platformed boots are about to be everywhere. Get ahead on the trend by wearing it now with a pair of socks and a mini dress for a fun, wear-anywhere outfit.
