Probably one of the biggest myths about sunscreen is that not everyone needs to wear it. News flash: Whether you’re young or old, Black or white, you need to wear sunscreen daily. But where are all the sunscreens for darker skin?

Seriously, let’s be real. There are many sunscreens on the market that don’t take into account people with darker skin tones. This could be one of the causes for many people’s sunscreen disdain.

Many sunscreens appear blue, purple or white on darker skin. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this is due to the physical ingredients required for “broad-spectrum” products.

Zinc oxide is one of the “white cast” culprits, but the good news is that it has hundreds of varieties. Thus, more companies are popping up with darker skin-friendly sunscreens that are just as effective as their “white” counterparts (see the play on words there?).

Below are a few sunscreens you should consider (based on our editor picks and first-hand experiences), whether you have darker skin or just want a new sunscreen that’s effective and affordable.
