‘Smashing little guy’: 6-year-old’s adorable pay-day goes viral

How old were you when you received your first pay? For one lucky boy, he received his first pay at just six in an act of kindness now being celebrated on the internet.

English woman Steph Heathcote shared on Twitter how when her family was having their patio done, her six-year-old son chose to help the builder.

In turn, the builder gave her son a “pay packet”.

“We have just had our patio done and my 6yo has loved going out and helping the builder, so it made his day to receive this,” Heathcote said.

“What an example of kindness.”

The pay packet for £10 (AU$18) was awarded for passing bricks and little pavers, pointing brick work, mixing cement, taking pictures of birds and spiders and “being a smashing little guy”, the tradie said, in a picture Heathcote shared.

The pay packet was also “minus tax and national insurance”, and noted the six-year-old’s ability to say ‘why’ “more times than I have ever heard anyone say why”.

“It was such a nice touch and the guy was brilliant with him, [I] just wanted to share how generous and lovely people can be,” Heathcote said.

And Twitter loved it: the story has racked up more than 250,000 likes with others sharing their own stories of kind-hearted tradies.

“Fantastic. When we had an extension done I was massively pregnant and had a five/six year old too. I will never forget the kindness our builder showed him. His name is engraved on one of the bricks and he was allowed to sign the concrete Hollywood style before tiles were laid,” one person shared.

“My friend Mike who is no longer, was a plumber amongst other things and his best work story was being instructed by a three-year-old on how to fix the toilet and what they had already tried,” added another.

“I remember helping the builder do my mum’s extension when I was around 13/14. Paid me £50 for mixing cement and cutting breeze blocks for a week. Well done to your lad for wanting to help,” shared another.
