6 reasons why you should look for a job in December
If you are thinking of a step-change in your career, now is a good time to start that job hunt.
An uptick in hiring tends to happen at year’s end, with employment numbers typically rising in the last quarter of the calendar year, according the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
So if you’re after a change of pace for 2019, here are six reasons why December is the ideal month to find a new job, according to recruitment agency Robert Half.
1. Companies are planning for the year ahead
Just as Christmas and New Year spells a wind-down for most businesses, January tends to kick off with a vengeance – meaning the end of the year is the perfect time to get new employees settled and up to speed before the next year.
2. Businesses are making the most of leftover budget
Companies and their departments can take advantage of any leftover budget at the tail end of the year to advertise for new roles, especially if that budget might be lost next year.
3. Other candidates drop out of the race
If you step up your search in December, you could be in the running for great openings and opportunities in a less competitive environment.
4. Employers will want to fill vacancies
With the month of December representing a particularly talent-short time of the year, the best candidates can be locked in more quickly as hiring managers seek to finish up recruiting processes before they clock off for the year.
5. More opportunities for networking
Christmas drinks, anyone? The last month of the year spells Christmas and end-of-year festivities, which is the perfect time to seek invitations to business functions, parties or events that could lead to new connections and potential job opportunities.
6. Stay ahead of the pack in 2019
If you start conversations with potential employers now, you might stay front of mind and give yourself a head start ahead of other candidates who start their job search next year.
