There are a lot of reasons you may notice that your hair is thinning, from aging and genetics to medications and the food you eat. Even breakage caused by over-styling and brushing can make your hair look and feel thinner. No matter the reason, hair loss is very common in women of all ages. Luckily, there is an expanding market for hair growth products for women, many of which are available over the counter.
The Cleveland Clinic estimates that more than 50% of women will experience noticeable hair loss in their lifetime, with the most significant cause being female pattern hair loss (FPHL). In fact, FPHL may affect as many as 30 million women in the United States.
Keep in mind that our bodies shed hair naturally — about 50 to 100 single hairs per day — and it’s part of a natural balance. However, when you have more hair falling out than there is hair growth, that’s when hair loss happens.
If your hair loss is accompanied by skin irritation or redness, your first plan of action should be to make an appointment with your dermatologist. However, if you’re just starting to get concerned or want to try something new, take a look below at five popular hair growth products for women, from supplements to serums.
1. Nutrafol, $79–$88
If you’ve done any research on your own into the best hair growth products, Nutrafol has probably come up. It’s a clinically backed hair growth nutraceutical (basically a supplement) to help people with hair loss and thinning. However, the brand actually sells four different types of supplements, including a standard one for women, for women postpartum, for women post-menopause and one for men.
Nutrafol products come with positive reviews by many (including doctors) who have tried them. One of its main ingredients is biotin, which is in a lot of hair, skin and nail supplements. However, you should speak with your doctor before taking it, especially if you take any other medications.
2. Vegamour GRO Hair Serum, $48–$58
This plant-based, cruelty-free hair serum claims to give users fuller-looking hair in as little as 90 days, with peak results around 120 days. If it comes close to 90 days and you don’t see any results, the brand offers a satisfaction guarantee, which allows you to return or exchange the used product.
That said, according to the product description, the serum features a combination of clinically-tested, vegan phyto-actives that work to support a balanced follicular ecosystem, soothe the scalp and revitalize your hair’s roots. The brand’s studies show that in turn, the serum can make hair look thicker and reduce signs of shedding.
3. Keranique Hair Regrowth Treatment for Women, $29.95
Keranique has a full line of women’s hair growth products, but its FDA-approved Hair Growth Treatment For Women stands out. It contains a chemical called minoxidil, which has been clinically proven to speed up hair growth. However, you should speak to your doctor before using this if you’re pregnant, planning to be pregnant or breastfeeding, as it could have potentially harmful side effects.
According to the product description, you can spray this treatment on areas where hair is thinning twice a day to reactivate hair follicles and stimulate hair regrowth. The brand also has a full hair regrowth system featuring shampoo, conditioner and other treatments.
4. Aveda Invati Advanced System Set, $138 ($148 value)
Aveda’s mostly natural Invati System is one of the brand’s best-selling lines. According to its product description, the system can reduce hair loss caused by breakage by 53% and instantly thickens hair when used daily. However, customers should see full results within 12 weeks when used regularly.
The system includes shampoo, conditioner, a scalp revitalizer and a thickening tonic. And, like most of the brand’s products, the Invati System is inspired by Ayurveda, a natural system of medicine that originated in India over 3000 years ago. The hair growth system features a blend of Ayurvedic herbs (like turmeric and ginseng) to help keep the hair you already have, invigorate the scalp and thicken your hair. That said, it also leaves hair smelling really good.
5. Hers Hair Loss Treatments, $15–$50
Hers is an online healthcare company that offers virtual primary care — essentially, it’s a telehealth company geared towards women. The brand specializes in those often “hard to talk about issues,” including sex, mental health and hair loss. Once you create a profile, you can connect with a medically licensed professional online to discuss your symptoms and get answers to any questions you may have.
When it comes to hair loss, however, Hers offers an online quiz to help you get a more personalized regimen. You can also purchase its 2% Minoxidil Solution or Biotin gummies over the counter (on its website), or you can speak with a medical professional to get more powerful products prescribed and shipped your way.
