A restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio made US$3,000 (AU$4,116.20) profit off one incredibly generous customer after he left a “whopping” tip.

The customer walked into Nighttown restaurant on Sunday, just before closing time, and ordered a single beer, according to owner Brendan Ring who wrote about the experience on Facebook.

He then “asked for the check and handed his credit card slip to me, wished me well while we sit out our voluntary shutdown, and told me to share the tip amongst the wait staff,” Ring said. There were four staff on that day.

The beer was just US$7.02, including tax, but the total figure at the bottom of the bill was US$3,007.02.

“As he walked out I looked down at the tip and realized he left a whopping $3000 tip on a single beer purchase,” Ring said.

Ring ran after the customer – but it wasn’t an error. “‘We will see you when you reopen!’” the man had said.

Ring said he and his waitstaff were “humbly grateful” for the “incredibly kind and grand gesture”.

“Unbelievable but symbolic of the kind of quality folks we have know [sic] at Nighttown all these years.

“I could post his name but I won’t as I think he wouldn’t want that,” he added.

The Facebook post has already drawn 287 shares and 149 comments.

“What a Blessing,” wrote one commenter. “Praying for everyone's safety, look forward to your reopening.”

Another said: “Light in dark times. Look for the helpers . We will see you again soon:) ”

Someone else wrote that the gesture was a testament to how “loved” Nighttown and its staff were.

But one discerning Facebook user cautioned that posting the receipt in its entirety might leave the restaurant exposed.

“Great gesture, but I recommend black out the numbers prior to posting, the cyber criminal probably have ability [sic] to reverse trace based on those numbers for identity theft or other purposes,” warned the user.
