4-DAY WEEKEND: Which shops are open over Easter, and when
Easter can be a trap for households that don’t plan ahead, with labour laws stopping stores from trading on certain days over the period.
So that you don’t run out of supplies, Yahoo Finance has done the rounds to ask which days supermarkets, shopping malls and cinemas will be open over the four-day long weekend:
Woolworths
There are some variations according to state:
Good Friday – all stores closed, except Brisbane Airport, Murray Bridge Marketplace (SA), Victor Harbor (SA) & Mt Barker (SA)
Easter Saturday – all stores open, except Sydney and Melbourne CBD outlets
Easter Sunday – most stores closed in NSW, SA; most stores open in ACT, Vic, Tas, Qld, NT and WA
Easter Monday – all stores open, except Sydney and Melbourne CBD outlets and Kalgoorlie, Esperance and Katanning in WA
Coles
Again, different laws in different states make the situation complex. Here’s a table provided by the supermarket:
Aldi
A spokesperson told Yahoo Finance that most Aldi stores will have “extended” opening hours on Thursday then all branches will be closed on Good Friday.
“On Easter Sunday some stores will open with reduced trading hours,” said the spokesperson.
Westfield Shopping Centres
The giant shopping mall chain will be closed on Good Friday, but it is trading on the other three days, although the hours will vary according to location.
Hoyts
If you want to see a movie over the long weekend, the Hoyts chain will be open at normal hours over all four days. The only exception is Western Australian cinemas won’t open until noon on Good Friday.
