The New South Wales government is offering solar battery rebates of up to $2,400 to households and small businesses in the state from this Friday. The government said the incentive could slash upfront costs and electricity bills for thousands.

From November 1, residents can get a discount on battery installation if they already have an existing solar system. There is also a combined discount on solar panels and battery installation if they haven’t got solar.

The discounts range from $770 to $1,150 for a 6.5 kWH battery, and $1,600 to $2,400 for a 13.5 kWh battery. The incentive is provided to accredited suppliers, which will then be passed on to residents through installers.

Energy Minister Penny Sharpe said the incentive would bring down the upfront cost of batteries and make them more accessible for households and businesses.

“More than 1,000,000 NSW households have solar panels on their roofs and adding a battery will see them benefit around the clock, not just when the sun is shining,” she said.

"This is a targeted action to support those with solar to take the next step to lowering their bills by using renewable energy. It also supports the state’s transition to renewable energy.”

The cost of installing solar batteries will vary. The cost of installing a BYD solar battery with a 13.8 kWh capacity is approximately $12,200, according to Solar Quotes.

A Tesla Powerwall 2 with a 13.5 kWH capacity is $15,500 and a Sungrow battery with 12.8 kWh capacity is $11,400.

How do I get the solar battery incentive?

The incentive is not a direct rebate to customers. Instead, it is provided as an upfront discount to accredited suppliers and passed onto the customer through installers.

The incentive will only be available for new battery installments. Batteries need to have a storage of between 2 and 28 kWh to be eligible.

The NSW government has more information about accredited installers and eligible batteries on its website.

You’ll also need to sign a nomination form from your chosen installer to allow the supplier to receive the incentive.

Families jump on early solar rebates

Battery provider VoltX Energy has been offering early rebates for households and expects there could be a "surge in demand" once the incentive kicks in.
