17-year-old’s ‘angelic’ gesture for senior shopper

A 17-year-old supermarket check-out girl has picked up the US$173 (AU$271) grocery bill of an elderly shopper, after he found himself US$33 short.

Senior shopper Layne McKeel received his disability cheque and decided to stock up on necessities, but missed the senior discount hours at his local supermarket in Tennessee, according to NBC.

“When she said it was $173.00, I said ‘Oh no’ and I pulled my wallet out and I only had 140,” McKeel told the outlet.

And rather than see McKeel put essential items back on the shelves, cashier Elizabeth Taylor paid for his entire bill.

“It was all essential stuff so I was just like you know, and he was like what do I owe you? And I was like no, it’s fine, I’ll take care of it, it’s okay,” said Taylor said.

“We’ve seen a lot of older people, and they’re all trying to buy groceries and a lot of places have ran out of stuff, and so the older people are kind of taking the downfall for that. I just try to give back when I can.”

“She’s just a little angel is what she was. You know, just the light of day,” McKeel said of the act.

Senior shoppers in Atlanta receive free groceries

While one shopper in Tennessee had his bill paid for, thousands across New Orleans, Atlanta and Georgia had theirs picked up by American actor and director Tyler Perry.

Elderly shoppers shopping during senior hour across 44 Kroger supermarkets and 29 Winn-Dixies in New Orleans, Atlanta and Georgia were told their bill had been picked up by an “Atlanta Angel”.

“Senior and higher-risk Kroger shoppers in metro Atlanta did receive a nice surprise at the register this morning when they learned Tyler Perry had paid their grocery tab in full,” Kroger supermarket spokesman, Felix Turner, said.

“We would like to join our customers in thanking Mr Perry for his kindness and generosity during this unprecedented pandemic.

Perry also left a $US500 to each server employed at US restaurant chain Houston’s days before, with the total tip amounting to US$21,000.
