120-year-old miners cottage ‘ripe for renovation’

It’s covered in mould and has holes in the ceiling, but this miners cottage in Queensland is expected to bring in the big bucks when it goes to auction next month.

Located in Railway Estate in Townsville, the original cottage is thought to have been moved to its current home in the early 1900s.

Selling agent Ian Clarke, of Clarke Real Estate, said that despite a much-needed facelift, the location of the property was sought after.

“The location is superb, being just 900m from the Queensland [Country] Bank sports stadium, approximately 1,400m to the action in Flinders Street or fine dining in Palmer Street,” the listing said.

“Being this close, you could be home quicker than hailing a ride.”

At 125 square metres, the property is spacious, with three bedrooms, one bathroom and a car space.

Clarke told realestate.com.au that since listing the property yesterday, there had been some serious interest from property flippers.

“It only went live yesterday but I have already had plenty of interest, mostly locals and mostly from the usual flippers,” Clarke said.

“A few are already trying to arrange a time to get their tradespeople in to have a look.”

Photographs from the 1930s show the original miners cottage and later photographs show a series of extensions being added over the years.

“You can see the stitch mark [from when it was cut and relocated] under the vinyl flooring,” he said.

“Back in those days, houses were relocated on the back of bullock wagons, which is unreal. She’s an old one, she is.”

Clarke said a similar property in south-east Queensland would “sell for millions” and he is hopeful the right buyer will restore the cottage to its former glory.
