10 things you need to know this morning in Australia

Good morning!

1. Trump congratulates Aussie PM Scott Morrison. Some are comparing the conservative Liberal-National Coalition's unexpected win over the weekend, thanks in large part to outer suburban seats, to Trump's own victory in the US in 2016.

2. Changing of the guard. Labor frontbenchers Tanya Plibersek and Anthony Albanese have announced they'll be standing for the party's leadership after the resignation of Bill Shorten. Plibersek will officially declare her candidacy this morning and has Shorten's backing, while Albanese broke his news yesterday.

3. Everyone deserves a second chance. And now fintech lender Prospa will get one as it announces an IPO, hoping to raise just under $110 million. The launch follows an unsuccessful attempt to list on the ASX in 2018.

4. 'Full employment' may be increasing economic inequality. Unemployment in the UK and the US is low right now. Both countries have technically achieved full employment (meaning virtually everyone who is willing and able to work is employed) through the growth of involuntary part-time jobs, but new data suggests it's increased inequality in the UK.

5. Them's fighting words. Trump has issued counter-threats to Iran over Twitter, saying if the nation doesn't change its behaviour it could result in the "official end of Iran". However, the New York Times has reported that the president has told close advisers he wants to avoid war with Iran.

6. Elon Musk speeding up the internet. The Tesla and SpaceX founder has a 2027 deadline to launch nearly 12,000 high-speed Starlink internet satellites into orbit to surround the Earth— but the service would work far sooner than that.

7. Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger was jump-kicked in the back during a visit to South Africa. The real kicker, though, is that he says he had no idea it had happened until he saw the video footage later.

8. Rafael Nadal swings career first. The Spaniard powered past Serb Novak Djokovic in the Italian Open final on Sunday. It was the first time a “bagel” (a set ending in a score of 6-0) had ever occurred in the Nadal-Djokovic rivalry.

9. Your fruit juice could be killing you. Researchers have concluded that people who routinely drink more fruit juice die quicker and get more diseases, even though the sugar found in it is natural. However, the researchers agree fruit juice does provide healthy antioxidants and vitamins.

10. Students in the US college admissions scandal were told to lie about their race. The Wall Street Journal has reported that wealthy families involved in the scandal were advised to have their applicant children claim they were racial minorities to improve their chances of getting into top colleges.

BONUS ITEM:

Alec Baldwin appeared as Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live to lead his closest associates in singing Queen’s 'Don’t Stop Me Now' and celebrate his policies ahead of the 2020 Election.
