The top ten highest paying jobs in the country have been revealed, with new data showing surgeons are the nations top earners.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has released its Taxation Statistics for 2018-19 with those in the medical field taking out the top three spots.

Surgeons earned an average of over $394,000 a year, followed by anaesthetists bringing in $386,000 a year and internal medicine specialists earning $ $304,700.

Surgeons have taken out the top spot since at least 2010, according to the ATO data with their average annual income increasing around $52,500 in the last 10 years.

By comparison, the average Aussie earns $62,549 a year in taxable income.

For the most part the amount of money earned is somewhat proportionate to the limited number of people who do the job.

For example, there are only 4,150 surgeons in Australia and 3,412 anaesthetists, so they are specialised positions and in turn earn more.

However, this is not the case at all for CEO’s and managing directors, where the amount of those in the job outweighs the pay packets they take home.

There are 190,400 CEO’s and managing directors in Australia, on average taking home around $165,000 each.

The top ten earners in Australia are:

  1. Surgeons - $394,303

  2. Anesthetists - $386,065

  3. Internal medical specialist - $304,752

  4. Financial dealer - $275,984

  5. Psychiatrist - $235,558

  6. Other medical practitioners - $222,933

  7. Judicial or other legal professionals - $188,798

  8. Mining engineer - $184,507

  9. CEO or managing director - $164,896

  10. Engineering manager - $159,940
