Mystery couple raffle off their $4.2m home

A mystery couple in the UK is raffling off their $4.2 million (£2.3 million) home, complete with grounds, Rolls Royce and fully-stocked wine cellar.

And, for $18.30, you could be the winner.

The current owners are a self-made millionaire couple who will hand over the keys, provided at least 500,000 tickets are sold – if not, the winner will receive a cash prize of at least $182,000 instead.

The winner will receive the Devon mansion, together with the 10-acre estate, indoor swimming pool, gym, 3-hole golfing green, Rolls Royce and even the use of the estate’s housekeeper and gardener for one year.

The house also comes fully furnished, with a fully-stocked kitchen, wine cellar and bar.

There are also nine $18,000 runner-up prizes on the table.

How to enter

To enter, competitors must buy a ticket and answer a question correctly. Individual competitors can buy up to 10,000 tickets, up until the closing date of midnight, 30 November 2019 or when one million tickets are sold.

The global competition launched first in Britain but is now available to competitors in Australia and New Zealand.

Twenty per cent of the proceeds will be donated to charities including Make a Wish and British Red Cross.

You should probably know…

The competition was originally slated to close November 2018, however it has since been extended by a year.

And, according to competition and raffle site, Loquax, the likelihood of walking away with the mansion is unlikely. There are currently 17 properties across the UK being raffled.
However, of the 30 closed raffles, only one resulted in a winner gaining a house. The rest either ended with a cash prize or refunds.

The self-made millionaire couple, who prefer to remain anonymous, said they’re passionate about giving others a helping hand since they were also supported by an employer when first starting out in business all those years ago.

“Our house holds many fond family memories, but now we want to use the home we designed and built to aid a host of wonderful charities, as well as giving someone the chance to become an instant millionaire,” they said.

“It’s lovely to think that someone, somewhere around the world will win what is a quintessential British mansion in one of the most idyllic parts of England,” they added.

This isn’t the first home raffle

It’s not the first time a millionaire has sold their home via raffle. Another UK couple, with a mansion in Hertfordshire, have decided to raffle off their six-bedroom property, Dancers Hill House.

The listed property worth more than £5.25 million is available with the purchase of a £13.50 raffle ticket.

The couple, Nigel and Melanie Walsh told The Independent they decided to sell their home in this way because the property was just too big.

“There is just the two of us now – 7,500 square feet for two people – I mean it is funny, but it is crazy, we just don’t fill it anymore,” Melanie said.

“I just got the feeling the house needed a new family, a new chapter. It has had a fantastic life.”

Closer to home, RSL Queensland recently had to sell a McMahons Point apartment after it failed to be picked as the winning property in a $5 raffle. In August, the Art Union raffle offered up the Sydney McMahon’s Point apartment or a waterfront Gold Coast property.

The winner chose the Gold Coast property.
