81% of middle-income Americans see inflation as a major financial concern, according to a new Santander survey. Santander US CEO Tim Wennes joins Wealth! to break down the survey's findings and what it signals about the state of America's middle class. Wennes notes that the concern about inflation is at the highest level since the third quarter of 2023: "Even though we've seen inflation moderate, I think the cumulative effect on consumers is impactful. And 90% have said that they've made some kind of spending adjustment here recently in order to maintain their finances and their financial prosperity in the face of the inflation." Middle-class Americans are cutting back on retail spending as one way to manage their budgets amid inflationary pressures. Many are also dipping into their savings and having to borrow more. However, this may be attributed to many not taking advantage of higher interest rates on high-yield savings accounts or CDs (certificates of deposit). Welles explains that 50% of those surveyed are earning less than 3% on their savings, and 24% aren't even aware of the rate they earn on their savings accounts. While roughly 80% of middle-class Americans are current on paying their bills, there was a 7% increase in those who had to dip into their savings in order to keep up to date with payments. Meanwhile, 53% of those surveyed have delayed purchasing a new car due to higher prices and financing expenses.
