Lloyd's of London insurers Hiscox and Lancashire do not expect large insurance claims from the collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge in March that caused widespread disruption, they said on Thursday. Hiscox does not have direct exposure to the business interruption policy of the port, which is the busiest in the United States for auto shipments, or the property policy covering the bridge, the insurer said in its first-quarter trading statement. Hiscox said it was one of the reinsurers on the International Group of P&I Clubs' ship reinsurance policy, but said it expected its net loss to be "moderate", without giving further explanation.

Shares of Starbucks fell 15% to their lowest in nearly two years on Wednesday, after the coffee chain cut annual forecasts on persistent weak demand from inflation-weary U.S. customers and a slower-than-expected economic recovery in China. Price hikes taken last year have forced customers to ditch cafes and restaurants and instead drink coffee at home, hurting business for chains such as Starbucks. "The inability to stop the traffic leakage from the early signs of pull-back in November to date and the worsening macro and competitive dynamics in China may suggest prolonged challenges and no evidence of light at the end of the tunnel," Danilo Gargiulo, senior analyst at Bernstein, wrote in a note.
Investors do not expect India's national elections to spark major volatility in the country's stock market, unlike prior occasions, based on the low cost of insuring against a slide if Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not win a third straight term. The Nifty 50, India's main equity gauge, is trading at record-high levels amid surveys predicting Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will emerge victorious in the elections that started on April 19 and runs through June 4, when results are due. A month before that, the implied volatility of a put option with a strike price that is 10% below the current level of the Nifty 50 Index is at 18%-20% on the National Stock Exchange.
Canada in March recorded a surprise trade deficit of C$2.28 billion ($1.66 billion), the largest in nine months, as exports declined faster than imports, data showed on Thursday. Total exports fell 5.3% in March mainly due to exports of unwrought gold declining from a record high reached in February, while imports were down 1.2%, led by electronics and metal ores and non-metallic minerals, Statistics Canada said. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast a trade surplus of C$1.50 billion in the month.
