National Grid lifts ban on gas customers in New York

National Grid has agreed to lift a ban on connecting new customers in southern areas of New York to the local gas grid after the city’s governor threatened to revoke its operating licence. The UK utility said on Monday it had agreed to lift a moratorium it imposed in May on connecting new customers in downstate areas such as Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island for a period of two years. National Grid had introduced the ban amid a dispute over gas supplies in New York after Andrew Cuomo, the state’s governor, rejected a permit for a $1bn gas supply pipeline.
