The impairment provisions would lead to the telecom giant reporting a net loss for the second-half period and a lower net profit for the full-year ended March 31, 2024, according to Singtel. Shares of Singtel were down 2.5% during Monday midday at S$2.35 per share, underperforming the broader benchmark stock index's 0.2% decline. "Singtel highlighted that this won't impact its dividend which is based on 70% to 90% of the underlying net income while the non-cash impairment charges will be booked as one offs," Maybank Research analyst Hussaini Saifee wrote in a research note on Monday.

BHP's $39 billion bid will be the elephant in the room at Anglo American's Tuesday annual general meeting, with regulations meaning little can be said about the spurned offer. The world's biggest listed mining group is considering making an improved offer for Anglo, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Saturday, after its initial takeover proposal was rejected last week. Asian FX traders will be on heightened Japanese intervention alert again on Tuesday after Tokyo reportedly stepped into the market on Monday, catapulting the yen up from a 34-year low of 160 per dollar and onto a roller-coaster ride of volatility. It was the dollar's breach of 160 yen that appears to have snapped the Ministry of Finance's patience. The yen's rebound was perhaps exaggerated because Japan was closed for a public holiday on Monday - the dollar fell as low as 154.50 yen - so market liquidity will return to more normal levels on Tuesday.
Months after a catastrophic fire burned more than 2,200 homes in Hawaii, some property owners are getting more bad news — their property insurance won't be renewed because their insurance company has deemed the risk too high. Insurance providers, state regulators and researchers are grappling with how to keep the insurance companies in business while keeping residents and their properties insured and protected. “I think most of the insurers, you know, I’m very grateful that they’re committed to the Hawaii market, so we haven’t seen wholesale withdrawals,” after the Aug. 8, 2023 fire burned through Lahaina and killed 101 people, Hawaii Insurance Commissioner Gordon Ito said during a Wildfire Risk Forum for insurance commissioners held at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.

Amazon (AMZN) will report its first quarter earnings alongside other tech giants like Apple (AAPL) this week. Creative Strategies CEO and Principal Analyst Ben Bajarin joins Market Domination to discuss Amazon's upcoming earnings and why investors should pay attention to how Amazon Web Services performs. On what to expect with AWS, Bajarin states: "Everybody is going to be looking at cloud growth for AWS. Right now, it's super trendy to talk about CapEx, everyone wants to see what the hyperscalers are spending in terms of new infrastructure, buying AI servers, creating 'AI factories,' as Nvidia (NVDA) likes to call them. I think that's what's going to be a big spotlight, what Amazon's growth is doing in terms of AWS. I think it's probably predictable it will be healthy, somewhat double-digit. Where are they going, where are they guiding, and what CapEx are they investing?" For more expert insight and the latest market action, click here to watch this full episode of Market Domination. Shared office space provider WeWork announced on Monday a settlement with its junior creditors and a new cash infusion from its senior lenders, moving ahead with a bankruptcy deal that rejects a $650 million offer from co-founder and former owner Adam Neumann. During a hearing in Newark, New Jersey, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge John Sherwood signed off on the New York-based, SoftBank-backed company sending its restructuring plan to a creditor vote, putting it on track to exit bankruptcy by the end of May. The restructuring, now supported by all of WeWork's major creditors, would hand the company's equity to its senior lenders and cancel its $4 billion in debt.

Tesla shares (TSLA) soared Monday morning after CEO Elon Musk traveled to China and secured regulators' support for its self-driving technology. China Beige Book CEO Leland Miller tells Yahoo Finance that Tesla "has to be the most technologically advanced car option because they can't compete on price because of the dynamics of the Chinese market." Miller says that because Tesla has to make a profit, unlike some of its Chinese rivals, it has to compete on technology, not pricing. Watch the video above to hear Miller's take on Musk's trip to China. For more expert insight and the latest market action, click here to watch this full episode of Catalysts. Chipmaker Onsemi beat Wall Street expectations for quarterly revenue and profit on Monday and reported a stable gross margin due to lowered costs, in the face of weakening electric vehicle sales. "The structural changes we have made to the business over the last three years have enabled us to sustain our gross margin despite challenging market conditions," said CEO Hassane El-Khoury. However, the company forecast second-quarter revenue and profit below analysts' estimates, fanning concerns of a delay in the recovery of automotive chip demand as a softening EV market and excess inventory at customers are expected to hit orders for Onsemi's chips.
