Skywest signs deal with Rio Tinto

Regional airline and takeover target Skywest has signed a new charter agreement with mining giant Rio Tinto to transport mine workers in the Pilbara.

Skywest, which is set to be bought by Virgin Australia, will provide flights to Boolgeeda in Western Australia for workers at Rio Tinto's Brockman 4 and surrounding mines, it said on Monday.

The first services will commence before the end of December, and over the three year-term of the contract Skywest expects to operate up to eight return services each week.

Virgin is waiting for regulatory approval for its $98.7 million takeover of Skywest, which was announced in October.
