The Premier Colin Barnett has dismissed concerns from green groups about oil and gas exploration near WA's Ningaloo Reef.
Apache Energy is the latest company to apply for Federal Government approval to undertake seismic monitoring 13 kilometres from the World Heritage-listed marine park.
Green groups are concerned it will affect the migration patterns of marine animals and want greater protection for the area.
Mr Barnett says while the area under exploration is a significant distance from Ningaloo Reef, any activity in the area will be closely monitored.
"That is in Commonwealth waters so it's a Commonwealth Government decision not a state one," he said.
"However, the State Government will monitor that program very closely to ensure there is no danger, no risk to the reef."
