Liberals propose Basslink Two partnership

The State Opposition wants the Government to investigate a partnership with Victoria to build an $800 million energy project.

The prospect of laying a second energy link across Bass Strait was investigated by the renewable energy development board last year.

A cable connects Tasmania to the power grid on the Australian mainland, supplying energy to Victoria during peak periods.

State Liberal Spokesman, Matthew Groom, says building a second Basslink cable should be further investigated.

"There are a number of buckets of funds at the national level," he said.

"It's also worth pointing out that Victoria currently enjoys the benefit of Basslink One and yet we pay for that, Tasmanians pay for that and yet Victorians benefit." "There is a case for Victoria to help fund a Basslink Two," Mr Groom said.

Mr Groom says the Government has been sitting on a report into the viability of a second Basslink cable.
