Insurance taskforce formed for flood victims

An insurance taskforce has been established to ensure flood-affected residents in south-west Queensland can lodge claims as quickly as possible.

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has declared a catastrophe for the towns of Mitchell, Charleville, Roma and St George.

ICA spokesman Campbell Fuller says many insurance companies have sent staff to the region to help residents and assess the damage.

"At this point we're expecting several thousand claims and we're expecting insurance payouts in the tens of millions of dollars," he said.

"Despite the significance of the flooding, we are expecting it to have a smaller impact than the floods of 2011.

"We wouldn't be expecting any abnormal processing delays.

"Insurers have their call centres staffed up and they're ready to handle inquiries and also process claims.

"This has been declared a catastrophe so the insurers are standing by to assist policy holders as much as they possibly can."
