Defence deal secures helicopter maintenance jobs

Defence Minister Stephen Smith has signed a $125 million contract with a Brisbane firm to support of Australian helicopter fleets.

The deal with Sikorsky Helitech is part of the Federal Government's $153 billion defence capability plan.

It is for maintenance and support of Australia's Black Hawk and Seahawk fleets.

Mr Smith says the Brisbane maintenance contract will provide greater certainty on defence spending for the industry.

"The contract will ensure local jobs and investment in Brisbane and Queensland," Mr Smith said.

He says Brisbane and Queensland are becoming a centre for helicopter and aviation maintenance.
