The State Government is being urged to consider funding a high-speed rail link around Melbourne's western suburbs.
The Maribyrnong Council says a freight line is already in existence between Brooklyn, Tottenham and Sunshine and the link would not be expensive.
Deputy Mayor Michael Clarke says it would take thousands of cars off the West Gate Bridge and the Geelong Road.
He says the Government should at least consider a feasibility study.
"The western region is the fastest-growing precinct in the nation," he said.
"With that growth we really do need public transport and we really do need, if you like, another dimension to public transport options in the west."
