(AAPL) is in the "early stage of testing" its own television set, according to a report.

The Cupertino, Calif. company is working with component makers in Asia on its TV-set designs, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

"It isn't a formal project yet. It is still in the early stage of testing," said a person familiar with the matter, according to the report.

Foxconn, an Asian company that assembles iPhones and iPads, and Sharp have been working together on a design for an Apple TV set, according to two sources, the Journal reported.

There has been speculation about an Apple TV-set for some time. However, the tech giant has yet to confirm such a project is in the works. In a recent interview with NBC's Brian Williams, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the TV was something the company had strong interest in.

"It's a market that we have intense interest in, and it's a market that we see that has been left behind," Cook said.

The company now sells Apple TV, a black box for $99 that allows users to access Apple's iTunes store and services such as (NFLX) and Hulu on their TVs. The speculation is that Apple wants to go a step further and reinvent the entire TV viewing experience.
