Staff at the Canberra Times must wait until Wednesday to find out how cuts announced by Fairfax will impact the capital newspaper.
The Australian media industry is facing an unprecedented shake-up following It is also introducing digital subscriptions for those two mastheads.
Canberra Times literary editor Gia Metherell says staff were informed of the cuts via email when they arrived at work on Monday.
She says the announcement was not surprising.
"But the timing and the scale was a bit of a shock," she said.
Fairfax executives Garry Linnell and Jack Matthews will meet Canberra Times staff on Wednesday to outline the plans.
Ms Metherell says staff will find out if the newspaper will become a tabloid and how many Canberra jobs will go.
"It will be very sombre.
People have been expecting this and I think what people really want at this stage is some sort of clarity so they can come to terms with exactly what their individual positions might be," she said.
