500 people enquire about home loan schemes

The Territory Insurance Office says it has received more than 500 calls from customers interested in the Government's new home loan schemes.

The My New Home scheme will allow people to borrow up to $750,000 without deposit and without paying mortgage insurance.

Homestart Extra allows low-income earners to borrow money from the Government in exchange for a share of equity in their property.

So far, more than 500 customers have contacted TIO about the loans.

Ten TIO staff have been redeployed to handle the enquiries and lending staff are working extended hours.

An ad campaign has been running on prime-time television and in newspapers.

The Chief Minister says he does not know how much the promotion is costing taxpayers but he believes it is a responsible use of Government money.
